Studying Animal Sounds
Materials Required:
- A tape recorder
- Paper and pencil
Nocturnal creatures are those who sleep during the day and remain awake at night. Owls, raccoons, frogs, crickets and locusts are a few examples. We can hear animal sounds, all times of the day.
Hypothesize that the sounds we hear in the morning are different from the ones heard after dark. Go out of the house one early morning and after taping the exact time, record the sounds you hear from around you, for five minutes. Repeat the same exercise, after dark for another five minutes.
Study the recordings and make a note of the difference in the sounds. What time of the day are the least animal sounds heard? When do you hear animals making the most sound? Which animal sounds do you hear only at certain intervals in the year?
