Ripening Quickly
Materials Required:
- Three raw bananas
- Three thermometers
- Two shoe boxes
- Black paint
- White paint
- Paintbrush
- Paper and pencil
Does the heat from the sun cause fruits to ripen faster? Some people place raw fruits by a sunny window to season them. Take two shoe boxes and paint the outer portion of one black. Also paint the outside of the other box white. Dry them and after putting one banana in each box, place them by a window, where the sun comes in. Then put a thermometer next to each banana and place the lids on the shoe boxes. The last banana will go on the window sill, with a thermometer next to it.
Read the temperature on the thermometers four times a day: early morning, noon, evening and night. Be careful not to change the reading by touching the tip of the thermometers. Follow this for a couple of days and make a note of the readings.
Are all the bananas turning yellow at the same time? Is one softer than the other? Does being softer indicate ripen?
Are there many black spots on the yellow banana’s skin? Does the presence of dark spot mean the banana has gone stale?
Peel and taste each of the bananas. Do they taste any different from each other?
