Moving Energy Uphill
Materials Required:
- A ruler
- Dominoes
Have you ever wondered whether a wave of energy can move in an upward direction? It’s really very easy to find out.
Take a long ruler and place two dominoes under it at one end, so that it can facilitate as a ramp. Now prop up a domino on the ramp, that you have constructed and see if it can stand up on its own, without any support. Keep adjusting the dominoes that are being used to prop up the ruler to get the right angle, but see to it that the ramp is a bit steep. Once this is done, place a line of dominoes all along the ramp. Keep a distance of around 2 cm between each domino.
Now gently tip forward the domino, which is placed right at the beginning of the ramp. Does this initiate a chain reaction of some sort? Therefore, a slight nudge at the lowest level causes a wave of energy, displacing all the dominoes placed along the ramp.
You can have some more fun with this experiment, by making the ramp steeper with the help of building blocks or some other similar material. Just remember that in this experiment, you must make sure that the domino that you are pushing, should touch the second domino at the top half of its structure. If it hits it at the middle of the lower-half, then there is a possibility that the second domino may fall backwards.
