Power Failure Cripples Life in City Kolkata
Dec. 16: The power failure in the city for 12 hours starting at 10.00 am, threw the life out of order. All offices wore a deserted look as most of the employees left their offices by 11.30 a.m. The worst hit were the customers of computerized branches of the bank, as they could sustain power only for three hours. The scene of the daily commuters was pathetic as many of them, being Saturday, wanted to visit their relatives, which unfortunately eluded them. Even the theatres in the city canceled their noon and matinee shows. Buses were overcrowded. When contacted, the CESC 9Kolkata Electric Supply Corporation), pleaded helplessness as the power supply to the state has been cut off by NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), due to non-payment of dues. The Left Front government said that this was the deliberate attempt by the Centre to disrupt the state machinery functioning and create a state of restlessness in the state. Hectic negotiations by Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya with the officials of NTPC could prove fruitful only after the C.M. assured that the payments would be made by 29th Dec. 2000. In the meanwhile, the State govt. is making the arrangement of the funds and has asked CESC to generate funds by coming out with strict measures against those arrears and power theft.
