Wrestling

One of the oldest sports known to us is wrestling, evidence of this can be found in many old book  paintings, sculptures and even in carvings on cave walls. Greek legends suggest that this sport was invented by their hero called Theseus. The walls of the ancient Egyptian tombs have figures of wrestlers painted and carved on them. Evidence shows that wrestling was a developed sport more than 5000 years ago. It probably originated in ancient Egypt and from there it got introduced into Asia and ancient Greece. The ancient Greek wrestlers used to rub oil on their bodies and then apply sand on it, this allowed them to get a better hold while wrestling. In those days the Greek wrestler Milo had the largest number of victories to his credit. Besides Greece, wrestling was also popular in Japan as early as 23 B.C. The Japanese style of wrestling was called ‘Sumo’ wrestling. Sumo wrestling was held in short matches where the wrestler tried to either throw his opponent out of the ring, marking the wrestling area, or by forcing him to the ground.
