Why is Karl Marx important?
Karl Marx was a German writer and philosopher who lived from 1818 to 1883. He saw that people were not equal; that emperors and nobles held power over the majority of people in many countries such as Russia, and that many employers grew rich through the exploitation of their workers.
Marx wanted to change things to make all people equal. He helped to found the ideas of communism — that there should be no absolute rulers and that the workers should own and run their factories. The wealth of each nation, and eventually of the world, should be shared equally among its people. Marx believed that this transformation would occur in time because most people would demand it.
Marx was expelled from Germany and France because of his views, and spent the second half of his life in Britain. Revolutions in Europe during his lifetime lessened absolute rule, but did not give the workers control. However, violent overthrow of the rulers in Russia in 1917 led to a communist government along the lines suggested by Marx, and communism has also come to other countries in the wake of war and revolution.
