Why is Elizabeth I remembered as a Great Queen?
During her short five-year reign, Queen Mary Tudor had become much disliked because of her religious views, her marriage with Philip of Spain who was a Catholic , and her disastrous war against France, which resulted in the loss of Calais, England’s last French possession. Therefore when Mary died in November 1558 and was succeeded as queen by Elizabeth, there was great rejoicing, everywhere.
From the beginning Elizabeth showed outstanding skill in winning and maintaining the loyalty and affection of the English people. As the daughter of Anne Boleyn, who had been executed on a charge of treason, Elizabeth had been surrounded by enemies since childhood. She had therefore learnt to be cautious, trusting no-one entirely and making the most of her opportunities. These qualities were to be of great value to her when she ascended the throne in 1558. An intelligent and well-educated woman, she chose her advisers carefully and thus ensured that the country was well administered. Under her firm rule England enjoyed a prestige and prosperity it had never known before, and her determination to put her country’s interest first made her a truly national figure in the eyes of her subjects.
