Paragraph on “Which English king is called the Great?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12
Which English king is called the Great?
Alfred (AD 849—AD 899) is the only English king to be known as the Great, and he well deserved his title. When he became king of the West Saxons (Wessex) in AD 871, the Norsemen had overrun most of England north of the Thames. By AD 896, after a series of brilliant victories, Alfred had successively resisted their attempts to invade the south, and laid the foundations of a united England.
He was a wise and practical ruler. He built the first English fleet and arranged for the laws of England to be codified. He founded schools and started The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a history of England starting from the invasion of Britain by Julius Caesar in 55 bc.
