What is the Solar System?
The solar system consists of the Sun and the family of objects that travel round it and accompany it through space. The Sun is a very ordinary star, as far as we can tell, and it is a fantastically hot, luminous globe of gas. Most of the gas is hydrogen.
There are nine known planets in the solar system. A planet is a solid body which does not shine by its own light. It travels round the Sun in an elliptical path or orbit. The length of time it takes to travel round the Sun is called its year.
The nine known planets, in order of distance from the Sun are Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Thousands upon thousands of tiny bodies the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It is thought that they might be fragments of a former planet which has disintegrated.
