In Search of Light
To manufacture their food plants need to carry out a process called photosynthesis and for this they need light. The need for light gives them the ability to sense the direction from which light is coming and grow towards it. If a potted plant is moved into the interiors and placed close to a window, one would see that the plant’s leaves gradually begin to face the window from where daylight comes in.
Even in natural surroundings, plants tend to grow out of shady areas and face the sun so that they can manufacture their food. Plant response to light is called phototropism which is once again controlled by certain hormones found in plants. There are certain species of plants which are so responsive to light that their leaves rise towards the sunlight during daytime and fall back at night.
