How is a cuttlefish like a jet plane?
The cuttlefish moves underwater and the jet plane moves through the air, but both use the same method — jet propulsion. The cuttlefish has a bag or cavity into which it lets water. When it is full, muscles in the cavity stop any more water coming in and push the water out of an opening in the back of the cuttlefish. It is well known in science that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that when the cuttlefish pushes water out at the back, the water pushes back on the cuttlefish and so moves it forward. The cuttlefish can control its speed because the faster it pushes the water out, the faster it moves forward.
The jet plane, travelling through the air expels gases with such force that it is able to move at very high speeds.
The cuttlefish has a gland which produces a dark fluid. If, for instance, it is being pursued by a predator, the cuttlefish can eject some of this fluid into the water jet. This acts in the same way as a smokescreen.
