Bicycles
The beginning of the bicycle goes back to the year 1817 when a German called Baron von Drais invented a machine called the ‘Draisine’. This machine had two wheels connected by a wooden bar. The rider sat on the wooden bar and propelled himself by pushing himself forward with his feet. The changing of direction or steering was done with the help of a handle in the front. Around the year 1840 a Scotsman called Macmillan took this machine and put some cranks on the axle of the rear wheel and connected them to pedals in the front with the help of driving rods. This allowed him to pedal instead of pushing the bicycle thus attaining a greater speed. The name bicycle was however first used in the year 1865. In those days bicycles had wooden wheels and it was much later that light alloy rims with spokes and rubber tyres were added. Today’s bicycles are much lighter and have many more additions like gear systems etc.
