Practical Guidelines
BASIS OF FRONT OFFICE (753)-XI
1.)MINIMUM PASS MARKS
The Minimum number of marks required to pass in each subject is (33) percent in the written papers and practical examination.
2.)Marks for record, Viva Project etc., in respect of Senior School Certificate Examination:
Marks allotted for laboratory Record, Viva Voice etc., should be separately stated in the answer book (if answer-Books are used) and added to the marks given for other items. The projects and the practical records, duly punched should be returned to the students concerned immediately after evaluation.
3.)Assessment of performance.
- The examiners (internal) may be assigned for the conduct and assessment of Practical Examinations each in Senior Secondary School Curriculum.
- Question for the viva examinations should be more of general nature and based on project work or the practical curriculum. Investigatory Project especially those that show considerable amount of effort and originality, on the part of the student, should get suitable high marks, while project of a routine or stereotyped nature should only receive MEDIOCRE marks.
- In the assessment and award of marks, strictly follow the marking Scheme which has been given in the list of practical I.e. provided to the Examiners/Schools at the time of Examination.
- Marks awarded for Project / Practical activities, for viva, for project and for
Practical files must be separately shown on the answer-book as the total.
- Award lists should be signed by the examiner.
Sample for projects have been given below. Any three projects can be selected during the year. However, teachers could also frame similar projects to test candidates’ skills. Project should be based from the field of subject as per the Curriculum
Project -15 MARKS
- Draw the staff hierarchy and the departmental organization chart of a large hotel.
- Prepare a model of any one type of guest room in a hotel and explain its unique features.
- Visit nearby hotels and collect tariff cards from the reception and design a tariff card of Hotel ABC on the basis of own creativity.
- Collect pictures/information of all equipments used in hotel in the front office department.
- Draw the layout of lobby in their chart papers with use of different coloured or
Students should collect pictures of lobby of different hotels and prepare a collage.
- Students should visit a nearby hotel/ collect information/pictures for equipments used for security purpose such as Metal detector, File alarm, smoke detector, CCTV, safety locker, etc.
- Make a First aid kit and make charts for do’s and don’ts for 4 common accidents in the kitchen (If students cannot be assigned a power point presentation, then they can communicate their project work through flip charts, flow diagram, etc . Students can use electronic media to collect information on hotel industry)
- Students should demonstrate their capacity to handle a project in the examination. To improve students presentation skills, it is suggested that the students be trained to present final project.
- The marks for the projects will be assessed by the subject teachers through, a well planned rubric, keeping in view the core content, quality of the project and presentation of work.
- The correctness and quality of the projects in accordance to the time limit should be kept in mind before grading the child.
VIVA BASED ON PROJECT 05 marks
- What special facilities are provided in a room for the guests?
- What is the use of a tariff card?
- List four important equipments used in front office.st
- What four equipments are used to ensure safety of guests
- If a guest has broken a leg, what should you never do?
Practical File – 05 Marks
The examiner conducting the final practical examination may ask verbal questions related to the project, if any, done by the student. Alternatively, if no project has been assigned to the students, viva may be based on questions of practical nature from the field of subject, as per the Curriculum
- The Examiner in charge of conducting practical may assign practical activities to the students as per the curriculum given below.
- Students are required to prepare a practical file as per the curriculum and instructions of the subject teacher.
Practical file should have at least 20 activities as given in the practical
Grooming and soft skills – 05 marks
- Communication skills -Ask to introduce self, talk about self, his likes/dislikes, why chosen this field , observe and note –clarity of thought and speech ,confidence
- Courtesy and Manners -how greets, sits only when asked to ,Table manners
- Grooming – uniform, nails, hair, shoes, etc
Demonstration of skill competency via Lab Activities- 10 marks
- Draw the layout of lobby and demarcate functional areas of front office department.
- Design a tariff card of a Hotel
- List three equipment each used for security of guest and the hotel
- First aid for cuts,( tie bandage on finger, wrist, elbow /any other )
- Outline instructions to handle the following situation( only one )
- a) Handling Guest Illness. Or
- b) Handling a Bomb Threat. Or
- c) Handling a Drunk Guest.
- Fill a booking diary/ advance letting chart/ density chart.
Cancellation/Amendment form/ Room Status Board.
- Make room reservation through Whitney system.
(Activity question can be created by examiner, to be conducted on the day of practical exam)
Record of Marks in the Practical answer-books
The marks for the practical will be assessed by the subject teachers through, a well planned rubric, keeping in view the core content, quality of the practical and presentation of work.
The examiner will indicate separately marks of practical examination on the title page of the answer-books under the following heads:-
Projects ( 3×5= 15) 15 Marks
- Viva 05 marks
- File 05 marks
- Grooming and soft skills 05 marks
- Demonstration of skill/practical exam 10 Marks
Total 40 marks
As students do not have an external examiner teachers could follow similar pattern as enunciated for Grade XII.
