Is Globalization New To India?
India has been home to globalization long before it became the new age mantra. The Indian civilization has been shaped by a myriad of global cultures and has become what we know as India today. Whether it was the Aryans, the Hindus, the Dravidians, the Greeks, the Buddhists, the Muslims, the Portuguese, the French, the Dutch or the English they all contributed to the globalization of this mighty land.
While they ruled, the English exploited India’s resources but they were also responsible for consolidating a land of many different kingdoms in to what we now know as modern India. To them goes the credit for India’s judiciary, its free press, its 40,000 miles of railroad track, canals and harbors. English as the language of Indian business and democracy, is all courtesy the English and is the reason why India is a linguistic global gateway today.
So, although a new wave of globalization has swept over India today, the seeds of globalization in India were sown centuries ago. The outsourcing of jobs to India which has resulted in jobs for a whole generation of youth happened only because India has a large work force of unemployed English speaking youth. So yes, although, globalization now means that you can watch MTV, drink coke and enjoy a Mc Donalds burger in India, it did not happen overnight. This country continues to grow and evolve, gracefully assimilating all the new and merging it with the old.
