Blood Donation as A Good Cause

 

Blood is a red liquid that flows in the bodies of humans and animals. Blood is required badly when a person loses it in accidents, diseases or during major surgeries. The life of a person can be in danger with the sudden loss of blood from the body. In different parts of the world, blood banks are established to provide the required blood group instantly to the patients.

Blood donating is one of the simple things that can be done to save someone’s life. Many people voluntarily participate in a good cause of blood donation. The blood banks collect blood from the blood donors after testing them. Blood is classified into different groups and stored for the future use.

Voluntary blood donation programmes have restricted ailments like AIDS, Malaria, Hepatitis B and C and other life threatening diseases. Voluntary blood donation also ensures the availability of all blood types at all times to help patients whose blood group types are rare during emergencies. Moreover, voluntary blood donation promotes love and unity among people. This is because; donating one’s precious blood is an act of love for humanity. It is a life-saving cause made by helpful individuals.

The most general guidelines for blood donation include that a donor must be at least sixteen years old and have a weight of at least 55 kilograms. He must be healthy. Blood is collected in a bottle or a special plastic bag. It has to be kept in a cool place and later it is sent to the blood bank. Blood can also be donated directly in the case of emergency. This is known as blood transfusion.

Records have shown that the blood donors are voluntary. World Health Organization works in collaboration with International Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies, International Federation of Blood Donor Organization, International Society of Blood Transfusion and the Save Blood Africa Project for this good cause. World Blood Donor Day is observed on 14th June every year.

Donating blood is a social responsibility.Due to the efforts of the donor, it will save the lives of his fellow beings. He himself may use the same in his own need. Thus, today’s donor may be tomorrow’s recipient. If a person is capable, he should surely donate blood. It is believed that someone needs blood every two seconds and one out of every seven people entering a hospital is in need of blood. Hence, importance of blood donation is tremendous. Donating blood is the greatest gift one can give to the humankind.
