We consider ourselves a superior form of creation with the ability to dominate the world. But despite the intelligence and superiority that we claim to have, we are yet to really understand the true aspects of Nature or to explain its behavior. Nevertheless, our curiosity and intelligence have helped us know our world substantially, and make the progress we enjoy, possible. This ability of ours to observe, reason, and explain which made knowledge possible, led us to the concepts of science. Science, as the tool with which we attempt to explain every phenomenon that affects us, has shown us our strengths and weaknesses.

Contrary to popular belief, our scientific temper and attitude are not recent developments. Even the most primitive ideas were based on observation and evidence. The belief that the Earth is flat and that the Sun and the Moon go round the Earth was certainly based on evidence. Even now, in a controlled context, ignoring the knowledge we have, we cannot dispute the belief. When we look around, the Earth still seems to be flat; when we look up, we see that the Sun and the Moon change positions with the passage of time, while the Earth seems stationary. The practice of basing inference on evidence was followed as diligently in this case, as it is by the most knowledgeable scientists of the present. The inference was, however, false, because the evidence was inadequate and the observations limited.

The inventions of primitive times, from fire to the wheel, were also the results of observation. If the sparks that flew off colliding boulders inspired us to make fire, the rolling tree trunk indicated to us the advantages of the wheel. Science has, therefore, been a constant companion of humankind, though scientific ideas and beliefs have changed with the times. By extending this argument, we may conclude that even the superstitions and prejudices that polluted society in the past may have been based on observation, and, therefore, were related to science. Ideas could not possibly spout in the mind from nowhere. The coexistence of man and science has been to the advantage of both. If science has contributed to improving our lifestyle, our desire to progress has inspired the development of science. But nevertheless, at no time in the past has the interaction between man and science been so intense as now. The age of industrialization, which started a flurry of inventions and discoveries a few hundred years ago, has been extremely demanding on scientific knowledge. By stimulating the growth of transportation and communication facilities in the twentieth century, science arid technology has shrunk the world in unimaginable measures. In a short span of about a hundred years, the motor car and the aircraft, which were invented at the turn of the twentieth century, provide the most comfortable and quickest means of transport. While the early motor car could manage speeds only slightly more than that of an average sprinter, the early aircraft could not fly more than a few meters. The pace of growth from such humble beginnings may be unimaginable when we consider that a modern car can cruise at speeds that seemingly match that of sound, and that modern aircraft flights can span thousands of kilometers.

On a different plane, the development of communication facilities has made information and knowledge exchange simple and swift. A gentle jab on the dial pad of a telephone can let us talk to anyone, anywhere in the world almost instantly. The development of television and radio, owing to which we may watch events or listen to them as they occur anywhere in the world, is equally remarkable. The developments in science have also brought about changes in our lifestyles. The variety of equipment and gadgets invented in recent times makes our lives unbelievably developments in healthcare and the treatment of diseases have increased our confidence in living.

The Importance of Science 35 Scientific development is, however, not without drawbacks. While science has shrunk the world virtually, it has congested at least parts of the world absolutely. The degradation of the Environment, caused by pollution, over-consumption, and unplanned exploitation of natural resources, has brought us to the verge of disaster. We are now realizing that much of what we did to improve our lifestyle is now threatening to ruin it. But the solutions to the problems caused by science are in science itself. Modern developments in environment-friendly technologies, capable of reducing the pressure on the earth’s resources, should restore our faith in science. The specter of extinction that we feel now should serve as a warning for us to be wiser and more cautious in our lives. Hopefully, our natural characteristics of wisdom and innovativeness will help us harness the vast potential of science to our advantage, rather than for our destruction.

The present era is the era of science. Science has undoubtedly done a great service to mankind. Man, a rational being, has been curious to explore mysteries of nature and this led to many discoveries being made in various parts of the world. But he is never satisfied with the acquired knowledge and is always keen to unravel mysteries of the universe. He has conquered the land and air. His incredible lust for knowledge has revolutionized human life and raised the standard of life.

He was able to invent innumerable ways of making his life comfortable and happy. Every sphere of life has been revolutionized by science. There have been innumerable inventions. One of the greatest inventions is the invention of medicines. There has been a series of tests carried out using animals as subjects and various medicines have been tried out on these animals to check their efficacy.

Many fatal diseases can now be cured because we have the drug to fight those diseases. It has reduced the infant mortality rate and increased the life span. Before these inventions, millions of people died for a lack of medical care. Science has given us many machines that have made our lives very comfortable. Buses, cars, sewing machines, mixes, grinders, etc. are all machines that are used every day by us and the discovery of electricity has made it possible for us to change night into day and summer into a comfortable cool season.

It is now easy to cultivate fields as we have tractors. New forms of irrigation are now being employed. It is easier to protect the crops because of the use of various chemicals and pesticides. Even mosquitoes can be driven away because of the discoveries made in science. It has enabled man to entertain himself in many ways. TV, radio, video, and the cinema are all popular means of entertainment. Besides entertainment, they educate the masses. Today the computer has made life even easier for us. The press, the means of communication, etc. have all improved because of science and its gifts to us.
