Sarvepalli Dr. Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great son of India. Born-in Tirutani on September 5, 1888 in a poor Brahmin family he studied on the strength of scholarships. In 1900 he studied in Wore college till 1904. He did his M.A. in philosophy from Madras Christian College. His M.A. thesis on the Ethics of the Vedanta’ was published when he was just 20. He married when he was 16 In 1909 he joined Madras Presidency College as Assistant Lecturer. Afterwards he joined Provincial Education Service. In between 1918 and 1921 he served as Professor of Philosophy in Mysore University. For two terms, between 1921 and 1931 and between 1937 and 1944 he was .appointed King, George Professor of Philosophy. In 1931 he became Vice Chancellor of Andhra University. He was the first Indian to be appointed as Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. `In 1948 he was in the Executive Board of UNESCO.

In 1948 Radhakrishnan was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union and endeared India and Indians to the Soviet Union’s people. In 1952, he became the President of UNESCO. In May 1962, he represented Calcutta University to the Congress of Philosophy, Harvard University. In his long career he received numerous honorary doctorates from universities-world-wide,

From his wife he had five daughters and a son. In 1952 he became the Vice-President of India. In 1954 he was honoured with ‘Bharat Ratna’—the highest award of the country. In 1962, he became the President of India and relinquished his office in 1967 and he breathed his last in 1975.

Radhakrishnan was a great orator and was considered a model teacher. His birthday is being celebrated as Teacher’s Day on September 5. This day, every year, sees talented teachers being felicitated by the ‘President of India. Radha Krishnan was a great teacher and his birthday celebrated as Teacher’s Day has immortalized his name.
