Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan

Among the great names of front rank freedom fighters Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose etc., Jaya Prakash Narayan also has his place. Like Subhash Chandra Bose he had an individuality of his own He always stood firm by his convictions and no fear or confederation could bend him. He has always been an outspoken person, no matter even if it has brought him a bad name. He has always advocated good relations between India and Pakistan. He was always opposed to the detention of Sheikh Abdullah of Kashmir. For this he had to face adverse criticism also, but he did not care for it.

            Born in a village in Bihar province on 11th October, 1902, he grew up in village surroundings like any other village lad, but he had his higher educati9on in America. On his return to India, he came under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Jaya Prakash Narayan were, in those days, considered to be the right and left hands of Gandhi. His wife Prabhaji, daughter of a lawyer of Bihar, always stood by him through thick and thin a bit differently from Gandhi while in America he had developed love for the teachings of Marx. So with the help of Acharya Narendra Dev and Ached Patwardhan he founded in 1934 socialist Party of India within the Congress, but his association with freedom movement remained as intact as ever.

            His revolutionary rote can never be forgotten. He suffered  much more than any other freedom fighter did. When he was in Jail in 1942, he made a plan in consultation with a dozen political prisoners to escape from jail. On 1st Nov. the dark night of Dewali, they executed the plan and escaped from Jail. There was a prize of Rs. 5,000 on his head, so he decided to go to Frontier Province, but when he was travelling by Frontier Mazil he was arrested by the British Police Officials at Amritsar.

            After all, India became free on 15th August, 1947. Under the Primeministership of Jawaharlal Nehru, India had her own govt. But Jaya Prakash Naranyan did not accept any office in the govt. Since he did not have much say against however he continued to express his precious opinions on all national issues. He joined Vinoba Bhave to help him in making his Bhoodan movement a success. He went with Vinobaji on foot from village to village, collected a lot of land and had it distreibuted and the outcasts became the aim of his life. In this area, his inspiration of the dacoits of Chambal Valley to surrender themselves unconditionally to the government, gave him a new importance and his name figure in the headlines of the newspapers.

            In 1973, the turned his attention to politics when he saw that politics was becoming a refuge of the scoundrels. He made the clarion call of total revolution. The youths of Gujarat and Bihar rose up at his call and there was change of government in Gujarat. As his movement started growing from strength to strength, he was arrested in the morning of 26th June, 1975 along with other opposition leaders and sent to jail.
