Importance of Travelling

Curiosity is one of the insatiable characteristics of man. Men have”; in all ages, wanted to know about things and places, natural and supernatural phenomena! In order to acquire knowledge, they have delved into books, and traveled in the face of several hazards. It was the keen desire to wander and sec places that led Columbus to discover America But for his zeal to travel, involving risk to his life and his fellow sailors America would not have been on the world map today. When the printing had not developed, and the newspapers were not available, travelers played a crucial role. People of a village or city gathered news about the happenings in other parts of the country iron the travelers. Also these travelers related the details of the difficult styles of living of people in different places and the listeners imbibed what they-could not gather from any-other source.

 
Francis Bacon wrote in his treatise on travel, “Travel is a part of education in the younger sort and a part of experience in the older. In fact, one may easily say that travel is both a source of education at an enjoyable experience. No amount of description of a place or peep in hooks can be a substitute to a personal visit to the place concerns. The impact of seeing it, for oneself is much more than merely reading about Knowledge is-interconnected, and this interconnection helps students to memorize more easily than otherwise. For example, a study of geography may only be interested in the climate and topography of a place. But it he has a chance of visiting the place; he would also be to view several other aspects. He can view the history of the lace, the place, the scenic splendor modes of living of the people. That is why now a day’s groups of students from different disciplines are taken out on tours by schools and Colleges.

Generally, when we get into the rut of travelling from our residence hour place of work, we begin to lose interest in our surroundings. Our power of observation is blunted. We seldom notice changes that take place on the route. This indifference to notice things extends to our general observation of things. But travelling sharpens our power of observation. When we are at a new place, we tend to get interested in e unfamiliar details of the place Our curiosity about the new place make  us alert and we begin to take mental note of the surroundings e are therefore, extra receptive to the impressions his is undoubtedly on excellent training for our minds.

Leading the life of a frog in the well narrows our mental horizons.  We begin to regard our narrow confines” as the whole World. We thus, acquire a sort of smugness about our progress and cultural mores” having not been exposed to anything different our tolerance for that which does not conform to our life-styles and ideology is reduced. But travelling brings us face to face with the variety that exists in this vast word. We meet people speaking different languages, eating different foods wearing different dresses, and absorbing lifestyles which have nothing in common with those of our own. We exchange ideas with other people in other lands. We become more amenable to accepting the existence of ideas different from our own. We find that there can be more than one way of dressing up and the other ways are not necessarily inferior to our Own. We may, at times, learn and benefit great the study of political and social institutions prevailing in other countries. In fact several governmental trips to foreign countries are with the intention of studying their institutions and bringing about improvement in our own.

Several problems arise from the fact that people of different regions in the country seldom find an opportunity to visit regions other than their own. They cannot learn and understand at firsthand about the true nature of the problems of a particular region. Many a time, when one looks at a problem from another point of view, one understands and realizes the unreasonableness of one’s own Stand. In that case, the solution of the problem by negotiation and reconciliation becomes so much easier. Furthermore, travelling in different regions of the country 1 give one a sense of fellow feeling and friendliness. Any issue which requires solution with such feelings becomes less intractable.

The bureaucrats generally remain in their ivory towers. They do not go out to far flung places in the interest at the country. With the result they do not have genuine knowledge of the hardships being faced by the people out there. The policies they frame lack relevance to the socio economic needs of those people. Consequently there is little relief for the suffering people all they organize those Selves and indulge in demonstrations and agitations.

 
Travel brings alive the historical and other monuments. We generally read about them in books, and they remain in our minds only as abstract word-masses. When we are face to face with monuments we have read about, we experience a thrill which is not to be good through books at all, A tourist may have read volumes on the Taj Mahal, but the splendour, the fineness of architecture, the atmosphere of the legend associated with it, all are felt by him only when he comes to visit this monument of singular beauty.

Travelling also satisfies the spirit of adventure in us. Visiting far flung places sometimes not easily Connected by transport, entails difficulties. But therein lies the thrill of having conquered the distance. There is something in man which drives him towards tackling challenges and travelling fulfils this urge.

Besides being a source of instruction and education, travelling also, provides joy and pleasure. The thrill of being at a new place, amidst strange people and sharing exotic food with them is something which cannot be adequately put into words. While travelling one finds oneself released from the constraints of time and space, as it were. The unique sense of freedom is indeed exhilarating” The joy of witnessing the heavenly beauty of Kashmir Valley is tremendous Watching the sunset at a beach or experiencing the sensation of standing on slipping sands , there is really ecstatic.

Last but not the least, the illiterate, who cannot learn from books can also educate himself by travelling and observing things. Actually, the knowledge acquired by an illiterate person by visiting different places? Would be much more meaningful to him. it will remain with him for: the rest of his life, as against the bookish knowledge which may sometimes leave some doubts in the mind of the reader.
