Savarkar was a great patriot, a scholar, a poet and a writer all rolled into one. He started patriotic activities even in his student days. At the age of 16, he founded Abhinav Bharat. It would not be an exaggeration to call Savarkar a born revolutionary.
He was not awarded his B.A. degree, which he passed from Ferguson College, Pune, due to his revolutionary activities.
He was arrested and jailed for his nationalistic activities. When he was being brought to India from England to face trial, he jumped off the ship into the sea and swam into the French territory. It was an unprecedented and unparalleled act of bravery and for many such brave acts he is-called veer meaning brave.
Savarkar wrote many books, among them History of India’s Independence is a prominent one. Savarkar came into contact with many revolutionaries of the world during his sojourn in England. He himself was revolution personified. He also championed the cause of Indianness. .
Savarkar suffered many hardships at the hands of British, but his courage and his devotion never flagged. His name has been immortalised in the annals of Indian history.
