T.S. Eliot was born in America but he came to England and lived in England all his life. He was educated at various places in England and on the European continent. He knew French and English and was a master of French language, English literature and history.
As is usually the case with writers, Eliot’s early works were seen and appreciated by his friends only. He was a teacher in a school for a couple of years and he also served in a bank before shifting fully to literature. He was also the Director of a publishing firm.
Eliot’s first poem was published in 1917. Bertrand Russell was the man to spot and recognize his talent. He, along with a couple of his friends, brought Eliot into limelight. In 1922, Eliot got his book The Wasteland published, which earned him fame.
Eliot wrote a few plays also. Murder in a Cathedral is famous among them. His essays on criticism hold an important place in literature. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1948. In 1927, he accepted the British citizenship. Eliot is also well known for his free-verses.
Eliot was an intellectual. He gave new trends to the literature and brought in new methods of literary criticism. He was an innovator in this field.
