Shriniwas Ramanujan is among the noted mathematicians of the world. His feats are prodigal. Ramanujan had to face extreme poverty. For many years he was associated with Madras University. In 1914, he went to Cambridge for studies. At that time he was famous as a mathematician. He could solve many difficult questions due to his extraordinary brilliance. In 1917, he became famous in Europe. He returned to India in 1919 and’ plunged into research. He was selected for Royal Society in 1919 and was the first Indian to be its ‘Fellow ‘.
Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 at Erode in Tamil Nadu to extremely poor parents. He always passed his examinations with high marks passing his matriculation at 17. He was married in 1909. He invented new methods for solving mathematical problems. Ramanujan died in Cholpur on 26 April 1920. Many of his works have come to limelight after his death and are being researched upon. During his lifetime even famous British mathematicians were wonderstruck by his genius.
In the short span of 33 years Ramanujan brought pride to India. The Government of India issued a commemorative stamp in honour of this mathematical wizard.
