Mazzini
Italy : Founder of modern Italy
Born : 1805 Died : 1882
If Italy is today a unified country, the credit goes to Mazzini who worked for its unification with single minded devotion. Italy was composed of small principalities always daring to fight each other.
The patriot and visionary who dreamt about the unification of Italy as one political and geographical unit was born in 1805 at Genova in an affluent and educated family. As said before, Italy was divided in small principalities which were often under some foreign rule. Mazzini joined the revolutionary group ‘Carbonan’ to plan for its unification. He was arrested in 1830 and had to live in exile for the next forty years.
During his exile, Mazzini established a group named ‘Young Italy’ in France. The movement for freedom and unification became stronger day by day. Mazzini also launched agitations in Poland, Germany and Switzerland through his ‘Young Europe’ group established in 1834.
`Young Italy’ aimed at kindling desire for freedom and unification amongst the people of Italy. This group was able to arouse intense patriotism amongst the people of Italy. Thousands of young men joined it as volunteers. Amongst them was Garibaldi who fulfilled Mazzini’s dreams at a later stage.
Mazzini lived in England for most of the time after founding of `Young Italy’. He had firm faith in democracy. He once refused to lend his service to monarchy. A duties of Man is his immortal work. He died at Pisa on March 10, 1882.
