Lucille Ball nicknamed as the ‘Female Chaplin’ remained the favourite of millions of fans on the silver screen as well as on the video screen, i.e., TV. Very few artists can claim such a distinction, for Lucy made millions to laugh with her impish humour. Born at New York on August 6, 1911, Lucille started her career as a model. Soon, she turned towards films and worked in more than fifty films during her three-decade-long career. Her first film was Roman Scandals (1934). Her other popular films are Three Stooges, Dubaire was a Lady, Stage Door, The Big Street, Too Many Girls. She was the recipient of four ‘Emmy Awards’ between 1952 and 1968.
In 1940, she married a co-actor Desi Amaz who belonged to Cuba. Desi floated a company to help Lucy exploit her talents. They made films and short programmes for TV. This company earned millions. Lucille divorced Desi in 1960 and married Garry Martin. Her Beverley Hills house was always full of her admirers and she remained a very popular artist. On the American TV, she entertained millions of audience by her short films like I Love Lucy and Here is Lucy. These serials were most popular and were shown even on Indian T.V. Because of her immense popularity, many dolls, comics, songs and garments with stickers carrying her name flooded the market Lucille retired from her active life in 1974 but by then she had earned enough popularity and money. She died on 27 April, 1989 at Los Angeles.
