Lu Shun was a contemporary of Munshi Prem Chand and as a writer, stands a fair comparison with him. Both took up the case of weaker and exploted sections of society and tried to remove the cobwebs of hypocrisy and superstitions. Both knew intimately the stark realities of the rural life in their respective countries. Again, like Prem Chand, Lu Shun was also a writer of people in the true sense of the word. He oppesed the feudal system and championed the cause of people’s rights. He expressed deep sympathy with the exploited people living under semi-feudal society of China and struggled all his life for their liberation. Lu Shun also took part in political activities and o ganized the Chinese Youth against the repressive measures of the Kuomintang government. Some famous literary works of Lu Shun are: Diary of a Mad Man, Warm Air, Medicine, My Old House and Worship of the New Year.
Lu Shun was born on 25th September 1881, in Shao Shing (China). At 18, he went to Nanking for studies and in 1902 to Japan for completing a course in medicine. He took admission in a provincial college but leaving his studies unfinished he came to Tokyo. In Tokyo, with the cooperation of some enthusiastic Chinese youths he tried to start a literary magazine but failed for lack of co-operation. On his return from Japan in 1908, Lu Shun inspired the Chinese Youths for revolutionary activities. He also devoted himself to creative writing as well as took part in political activities. He also fought against the Japanese invasion on China in early 1930. This progressive writer who was a champion of the downtrodden breathed his last on 19th October, 1936 at the age of 55.
