Khudi Ram Bose
India : A Young Revolutionary
Born : AD 1889 Deed : AD 1908
Bengal has produced many revolutionaries, patriots, nationalists and leaders. Khudi Ram Bose was a revolutionary. For a revolutionary there was no joy in life except the hangman’s noose round his neck for the cause of freedom of his motherland. Khudi Ram was a living example of this sacrifice. An inborn patriot, Khudi Ram popularised the gospel of “Vande Mataram” at the tender age of 16. In 1906, at an exhibition organised by the British, he distributed anti-government pamphlets. On 30 April 1908, he and Prafulla Chandra Chaki tried to throw a bomb on the tyrannical magistrate Kingsford, but their plan was thwarted by a few traitors who betrayed them. Khudi Ram was arrested and sentenced to death. He smiled while accepting the hangman’s noose.
Khudi Ram Bose was born in Medinipur (West Bengal) on 3 December 1889. He was the only living son of the Bose family. When Khudi Ram was just 6, his parents expired, leaving the child to face untold miseries. In youth, he was drawn to revolutionary activities and he jumped into it heart and soul. He died when only in his teens, on 19 August 1908.
However, the sacrifices of people like Khudi Ram and others did not go in vain. Their dream of a free India materialised, though after a long struggle.
