Kabir
India : Devotional Poet and Social Reformer
Born : AD 1399 Died : AD 1518
Saint Kabir, a Bhakti poet gave a severe blow to the ostentatious and dead customs of Indian society. His poems are read and sung even today with great relish. He was not only a litterateur of the Bhakti period but was also a social reformer. He tried all his life to unite the Hindus and the Muslims and preached against useless religious practices which divide people instead of uniting them. He believed in a formless God (Brahma) and was strongly opposed to the divisive caste-system. He is considered to be the exponent of Hindu-Muslim unity. He showed the society anew way by dragging it out of its orthodox practices and bigotry. His works have been compiled in Shakti, Sabad, Kamaini and Beejak. His riddles are also well-known.
Kabir was born in a Hindu family but was brought up by a Muslim couple. His mother’s name was Loi. When touched by the saintly Ramanand at Kashi Ghat, Kabir felt elevated. He accepted Ramanand as his guru. He was a weaver by profession. Although not much educated in terms of conventional educational system, he was a proponent of reformist ideas which were new for his time.
Kabir died in Maghar. His death raised a controversy regarding his last rites as to whether it should be according to Hindu practice or Muslim practice. It is said that when the shroud was lifted there were just a few flowers lying where the body lay.
