John Fitzgerald Kennedy was one of the most popular Presidents of U.S.A. He was also the first Roman Catholic and the youngest American to be elected to the office of the President of U.S.A. He was particularly very popular with the younger people and he represented their hopes and aspirations. In the 1960 Presidential elections he was a Democratic Party’s candidate and was elected by defeating his Republican rival by a narrow margin.
John Kennedy was born on 29th May, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts and was the son of Joseph Kennedy, a successful businessman and politician, of Grish Origin. Kennedy graduated from Harward University in 1940 and in 1943, he joined the American Navy. During the Second World War, he was decorated for bravery when as a tarpedo boat commander he saved the lives of his crew members. When war ended, Kennedy joined politics as a Democrat and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 and was re-elected for two more terms. In 1952, he was elected to the American Senate. In the Presidential elections held in November 1960, Kennedy defeated the Republican candidate Richard Nixon by a small margin.
The Presidency of Kennedy was remarkable for the courageous handling of the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’ in 1962 and advocacy of civil rights for Negroes. In the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’ Kennedy made it clear that he would not hesitate to use even nuclear weapons if U.S.S.R. did not withdraw missiles from Cuba. Kennedy was opposed to the further expansion of communism. Kennedy also wrote several books ‘Why England Slept’ and ‘Profile in Courage’ are his two most popular books. Kennedy was also honoured with the Pulitzer Prize. Kennedy was a friend and well wisher of India. He appreciated various development schemes launched our country. On the fateful day of 23rd November 1963, Kennedy was assassinated when he was going with his wife to deliver a public speech at Dallas. In his death, world lost a foresighted statesman and a great champion of peace.
