John D Rockefeller
America : A philanthropic industrialist
Born : 1839 Died : 1937
John D. Rockefeller left imprint on the sands of time that can be emulated both by the poor and the rich. The poor can take heart that hard work would enable them to reach the top, while the rich would learn from his life that the money so earned should be put to use for the welfare of the needy. Rockefeller provided a new definition to the task of earning wealth and then spending it for human welfare. This remains his biggest contribution for which he will be remembered for a long time.
Rockefeller was born at Richford (New York) in a poor family. His early life was full of want and misery. He worked as an accountant on a salary of $25 a month when his family shifted to Cleaveland. He did all types of odd jobs and saved money for the future. He started doing business with his savings. He became a partner of a businessman, when oil wells were traced in Pennsylvania. With his brother William, he floated Standard Oil Company. He rose to be the president of Standard Oil Company. At one time, Standard Oil controlled most of the oil business in the US. He was soon a billionaire and a leading industrialist.
He did not use this money for an extravagant lifestyle or ostentation. He liberally gave it for human welfare activities. No other person has given so much money for philanthropic work as Rockefeller did in his life time. Chicago University owes its existence to his generosity. He founded Rockefeller Foundation and gave away inestimable money for research in medicine, and to church and universities. Rockefeller Foundation is still providing money for humanitarian work and scholarships to meritorious and needy persons. Rockefeller died at the age of 98 in 1937.
