Ireland : Freedom Fighter

Born : AD 1882                    Died : AD 1975

Imon De Valera was a great revolutionary and freedom lighter. He was jailed for taking part in Easter-Revolution against Great Britain in 1916. He was sentenced to death which was later changed to life imprisonment. He was released from prison by Amnesty International only after one year. He then became Chairman of Sinn Finn, the Irish National Party. He was re-arrested in 1918. On his release, he became a member of ‘Dale’ the Irish Parliament. On assuming power in 1932, he took many drastic steps and tried to break relations with England.

In 1937, he announced new legislation proclaiming it as ‘Democratic Irish Free State’. He remained Prime Minister for 16 years from 1932 onwards. He was later elected Prime Minister for two more terms. Then he became President and remained so for 14 years. He contributed to the political freedom of Ireland as did Arthur Griffith and others.

De Valera was born in New York, the United States of America. He was the son of an Irish mother and Spanish father. He came to Ireland when he was two. He was a teacher of Mathematics after completing his studies, but he had to give up the job so as to fully participate in Ireland’s freedom struggle. He was an able and forceful orator. He lived upto 93.

De Valera was a great patriot. Though England has retained one portion of Ireland, the credit to liberate the other half goes to Dc Valera. He constantly opposed the British sovereignty. Ile is remembered by the Irish people with great reverence.
