The name ‘De-Gaulle’ is synonymous with France. At a time when France was passing through difficult phase with no stable government running the country, De-Gaulle came to power and brought a stability. He is called ‘General’ because he trained and then led the French army to victory in liberation of France in the Second World War.
In 1940, when Hitler occupied France, De-Gaulle reached England to seek British help. He formed a government-in-exile in London refusing to accept the puppet government set up by Hitler and declared that the Germans will have to vacate France.
De-Gaulle entered Paris in a grand manner in 1944, having forced the Germans to retreat. It was his most triumphant moment as it was indeed for all the Frenchmen. He became France’s Prime Minister in the immediate post-war government. He lost elections in 1946 and for the next 12 years spent life in isolation. That was the period when France was politically unstable. He returned to power in 1958 and remained its President for 10 years. He brought, about the much needed stability to France.
Every Frenchman feels proud at the mention of De-Gaulle’s name.
