Ernest Rutherford
Britain : Eminent Scientist
Born AD 1871 Died : AD 1937
Ernest Rutherford was born at Nelson in New Zealand in 1871. He -1=4 was extremely brilliant — a child prodigy, indeed. He used to work on his father’s farm when he was a student. He received a scholarship to study at Cambridge University, where he studied science.
By that time, research in the field of atomic activity had made tremendous progress. Marie Curie had discovered radium activity, but the reason for that activity was not yet known. It was left to Ernest Rutherford to dive into research in this area.
Rutherford published his findings in 1911 and these findings and the results threw much light on the structure of the atom. A new field was opened in Nuclear Physics. It was only after this that the atomic bomb could be made and atomic energy developed.
Rutherford did his research in the laboratory of the Cambridge University. Later, he became Professor of Physics at the Mc Gill University in Canada. He was knighted by the British Government in 1914 but earlier in 1908, he was awarded Nobel Prize for Physics. Sir Ernest Rutherford holds pride of a place in the world of physics.
