Taiwan : Nationalist Leader and General

Chiang Kai-Shek was one of the most prominent nationalist leaders and politicians of his country. He was also an able military general who succeeded in unifying China by suppressing rebellions. He took part in the 1911 Chinese revolution and was the chief of staff to the great revolutionary leader and the first President of China. Dr. Sun Yet-sen had founded Kuominatang or Nationalist Party in 1891, and after his death in 1925, Chiang Kai-Shek became the chief of this party. In 1928, he established a new national Government of China with its capital at Canton. Chiang staunchly Opposed the Communists who were gradually gaining strength in China. So it was natural that he would face trouble from the Communists. Chiang was even captured by the Communists in 1936, but released him so that he could fight the Japanese invaders. Japan launched a full-fledged aggression on China in 1937 and in this period of crisis, Communists formed a united front with Chiang Kai-Shek. With the defeat of Japan in 1945, a fierce Civil War broke out in China between, the forces of Chiang and Communists, now led by Mao Zedong. In 1948, a decisive battle was fought between the two in which the forces of Chiang Kai-Shek were defeated badly and Chiang along with his supporters fled away from China and took shelter in Formosa (Taiwan). In Taiwan, he established an independent government with American help.

Chiang Kai-Shek was born on 31st October in a poor peasant family of Sikiang. In the beginning, he faced the problem of unemployment and so joined the army. Courage and discipline were the two most important personal qualities of Chiang Kai-Shek. In 1923, Chiang had also learnt Russian military methods. This nationalist leader died on 5th April 1975.

For 25 years, Chiang was the undisputed leader of Taiwanese and Taiwan gained economic prosperity under his leadership.
