Among the successful women of the world, Anne Besant tops the list. She was so influenced by the Indian religion, philosophy and spirituality that she identified herself fully with India and became an inveterate Indian. Her contribution to India’s freedom struggle was also remarkable. She founded the Home-Rule League with support and co-operation of Lokmanya Tilak. She revived the Theosophical Society. In the field of social work, education and journalism, her contribution cannot be over-estimated. In 1915; she chaired the Calcutta session of the Congress. She also edited New India. She received a prestigious award for her work for scouts. India will always remember with relish, her works in the social, educational, spiritual and national fields.
Anne Besant was born in London to the. Irish parents. In 1893, she left for India having been influenced by the Indian culture and civilization. In 1914, she participated actively in all political activities here and was in favour of granting India its freedom. She also studied Hinduism. She died at a ripe old age of 86.
Even today, India remembers with gratefulness Anne Besants’ immeasurable work for freedom struggle, educational advancements and social reforms. Many Indian leaders were impressed by her liberal ideas.
