Ustad Alla-Uddin Khan holds an important place among the classical music maestros of India. He had an inclination towards music since his childhood. He was taught by Nanu Gopal, Nandlal and Vazir Khan. The Raja of Mehar, a connoisseur of music, made him his guru. On 19 October 1958, he was awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’ and in 1971, ‘Padma Vibhushan’. He joined hands with Uday Shankar, the famous dancer, in staging shows abroad which earned him fame. He dedicated the 100 years of his life to music and music only. All India Music Festival is organised every year to commemorate his contribution to music.
Alla-Uddin came of the farmer stock of Shipur (Tripura). He had an unquenchable urge for music since his childhood which forced him to leave his home when eight. Facing all odds, he continued learning music and with the passage of time his talent shone. For a while, he worked for a drama company. He died on 6 September 1972. His wife was Madina Begam
Ustad Alla-Uddin Khan remained engrossed in music till last, although he was a centurion. His contribution in this field will ever be remembered. His life is a symbol of the fact that one can reach the peak if one Works with unabated efforts.
