United Nations Day – 24th Oct.

United Nations Day is celebrated on the 24th of October specially in eighty-one countries but generally throughout the world. These countries are the members of the United Nations (UN). This day is observed with the object of informing the people of the world, as to the aims, purposes and achievements of the UN. On 24th October in 1945, after Second World War, the majority of nations adopted the Atlantic Charter, thus forming the U.N. Actually the United Nations grew out of the alliance of nations throughout the world against Nazi Germany in World War II. In the summer of 1941, a meeting between Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States and Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain, resolved into the Atlantic Charter, a set of principles for world peace, cooperation and maintaining international peace. Again in 1945, representatives from 50 nations met in San Francisco to phrase the basic charter for a World Organisation which would save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.

The aim of it was to maintain peace through collective action, eradicate illiteracy, poverty, disease and chronic ill health which often become the causes of war. The representatives of 50 countries at the United States conference drew up the United Nations Charter on the International organisation which met at San Francisco from April 25 to June 26, 1945. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom in the United States at Dumbarton Oaks. The representatives of 50 countries signed the charter on June 26, 1945. Preliminary drafts of the charter, which had been worked out by specialists were drafted in the final form at San Francisco. The five permanent members of the Security Council were the foremost members. To maintain peace and security in the world, the UN adopts various measures such as (i) appointing body of persons to help in bringing about an agreement between the opposing nations in their time of dispute, (ii) sending investigation mission to troubled areas to gain firsthand information about it, (iii) securing agreement to reduce armament and work for disarmament and (iv) appealing to member countries to observe principles enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Presently, Kiran Bedi of India has been appointed as the United Nations Civilian Police Advisor in the Department of Peacekeeping operations.
