Rabies Day – 6th July

Rabies Day celebration is an awareness programme to highlight the lexity of the disease, Rabies is caused by bitting of infected dogs, monkeys etc. The celebration of this Day endeavours to incite public interest towards preventing the high incidence of rabies in India. It is celebrated on 6th July to salute Louis Pasteur, a scientist, for discovering the first successful anti-rabies vaccine on July 6, 1885.

Rabies, a viral infection affects the brain and the nervous system of humans and other warm-blooded mammals. The infection is passed from the saliva of an infected animal. Our government is yet dormant towards the crisis of present rabies scenario in India. On being infected by this endemic infection, the patient needs immediate protection through Anti-Rabies serum. One should not panic and keep himself cool. The important do’s in combating rabies are:

  1. Wash wounds with soap and water. Then apply an antiseptic cream.
  2. Assess the severity of wounds.
  3. Apply rabies immunoglobulin.
  4. Proceed to vaccination.

An effective vaccine in hand with the latest technology besides primary health care knowledge enables a recommended treatment for rabies. Ignorance can prove even more fatal than the deadliest of the disease. Rabies is one such disease about which people should know the minimum.
