Ordnance Factory Day – 18th March

Ordnance Factory Day is celebrated on the 18th of March in all its units in India. Ordinance Factory meets the requirements of three services, viz, Army, Air force, and Navy by supplying arms, ammunitions and equipment. Hence it is rightly called ‘Fourth Arm of Defence.

Ordnance Factory Day is observed on the 18th of March as this day is the foundation day of the ordinance factory. The first ordinance factory was established at Cossipore near Kolkata. Ordinance factory produces a wide variety of military stores ranging from weapons, ammunitions, battle tanks, transport vehicles, troops, comfort stores and equipments for augmenting the military might of the country.

To discharge its responsibility more effectively, the manufacturing facilities have been modernized with new technologies. The ordinance factories are continuously striving to broaden their customer base. These efforts have succeeded in enhancing capacity utilization. Ordinance factories have also started exporting ammunitions, weapons, spares, clothing items, jackets, chemicals, explosives, propellants and parachutes, etc. The development of these ordinance factories were so planned and designed that they would mutually fulfill each other’s requirements. Today in the year 2003, the 40th factory is being set up at Rajgir, Nalanda to manufacture modular charges for 155 mm caliber ammunition.
