Charles Darwin
The theory of evolution is the key that has unlocked many secrets of the history of life on earth. It is the cornerstone of the foundation upon which the natural sciences are built. Charles Darwin is considered the father, and the most important figure in the development of the evolutionary theory. Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury England to a wealthy and sophisticated family with a background of scientific excellence. His paternal grandfather was a well-known physician Erasmus Darwin who formulated one of the first formal theories on evolution in his work Zoo Mania in which he discussed ideas that Charles would elaborate on some 60 years later. Darwin originally intended to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but after two years dropped out to enroll at the University of Cambridge, in preparation for becoming a clergyman of the Church of England. It is there that Darwin met the most influential figures in his education: Adam Sedgwick, a geologist, and John Stevens Henslowe, a naturalist.
