Navy Day – 4th September

December 4th is celebrated as Navy Day every year in commemoration of the winning glory of the Navy during the Indo-Pak war. The 1971 war with Pakistan was the biggest wartime operation of the Indian Navy in which every ship, aircraft and submarine took part in the war which were available at that time. During the Indo-Pak battle, the Indian Navy had lost only one ship. In 1971 INS Khukri was struck by three torpedoes on the night of December 9 and was destroyed.

Indian Navy has a saga of glory. The first Indian to be commissioned in the Royal Indian Marine on 6th January 1928 was Engineer sub Lt. D.N. Mukerji. The first naval airbase was commissioned in Cochin on Mau 11th, 1953, named as ‘INS Garuda.’ In 1971 only, an era of missile service was entered with the arrival of first missile boats.

Vice-Admiral R.D. Katari was India’s first chief of Naval staff but Admiral L. Ramdas was the most decorated naval officer. In INS chakra, the Navy’s nuclear submarine, an emergency appendectomy was performed at the depth of 120m in the Pacific Ocean. In 1990, a team of 24 divers from Indian Navy dived to a depth of 154 m under the supervision of ‘National Institute of Deep-Sea Diving of France and Delhi’s Naval Headquarter. Indian Navy today is participating in the ant insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Navy’s Marine commandoes are deployed in the valley along with the army.
