Dry Day – 2nd October

The birthday of Mahatma Gandhiji is celebrated every year on the 2nd of October, which is also celebrated as Dry Day. Dru Dau means prohibition from alcohol. It would be worthwhile to quote Mahatma Gandhiji, “I would rather have India reduced to a state of pauperism than have thousands of drunkards in our midst.” Gandhiji’s philosophy was to get freedom from alcohol.

Alcohol is a drink which affects our nervous system and brain. It dilutes our thinking and cripples the body when consumed in large quantities. Furthermore, when taken regularly,  it affects the liver and the kidney badly. Thus it decreases our life span and thinking ability. In many poor families, the husbands drink, abuse and beat their wives.

Alcohol just only satisfies ego and in return, a person gets pitfalls of his egotism. So to salute Gandhiji and respect his ideal against alcohol, this Dry Day is celebrated. On this day, the bad effects of alcohol are highlighted. All the alcohol shops are closed. People are bound to understand and realise the fact and bad effects of alcohol. Our government also devises plans and formulates rules against use of alcohol. Consuming alcohol is nothing more than burning hard-earned money and leaving bad effects on our body. Hundreds and hundreds of families get destroyed by the consumption of alcohol, which is a poison and curse in disguise. But they do not understand the reality out of habit. So Dry Day has a great role and importance to make them believe the bad effects of alcohol on health and family.

“Say no to alcohol, and say yes to life.”
