Cowards Die Many Times Before Their Death

To live in constant fear of death is death itself. The soul of a coward trembles at the slightest danger or the least apprehension of a loss. All his energies are then paralysed and he will be enervated. Such a man lives like a worm which can be crushed and squeezed at any time. He dies every day, nay, every minute.

The coward meets troubles half-heartedly. He is always worrying and brooding. There is the story of a man who died of worrying that he had enough wherewithal to last him ten years, but that he had nothing to live on for the eleventh year. Such a warrior knows no peace.

The brave man, however, faces the challenges of life with his head held high and his body erect. Come what may, he is full of cheer and hope. When an Englishman was asked whether he knew that the three angles of a triangle are equal to two right angles, pat came the reply, “When the triangle comes to me, I shall see.” It is of such stuff that the brave man is made. He lives a life of calm and balance but when the troubles come, he faces them with courage and fortitude. He rises to the occasion and even if death comes, he meets it cheerfully. He is always ready, unafraid.

At the beginning of the twentieth century Indians who had emigrated to South Africa as indentured labour, were subjected to great indignities and humiliations in, that country. But there arose one man who refused to bow to tyranny. When he was one day thrown out of a train, he challenged the powers that be. With death at every step facing him, he hurled defiance at the citadel of tyranny. It was the tussle between the soul force of a valiant man and the tremendous might of brute force. And the soul force triumphed. Coward’s falter but danger is often overcome by those who nobly dare. Whereas the common clay has counted the cost in terms of suffering and expense, heroes like Tenzing and Hillary have gone ahead with excelsior on their banners, defying wind and rain, scaling rocks and crags. They ultimately reached Everest. None but the brave deserves the prize. The chicken-hearted shopkeeper will always be afraid of investing money in risky undertakings. He plays safe with his capital and remains glued to his thousands, but the adventurous businessman will fling his all and be a millionaire by taking risks.
