Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily I write this to invite the kind attention of the authorities that be to the utter neglect of trees in our cities.

Importance of trees for our ecological system can hardly be over emphasised. Alarmed at the rapid deforestation in the country and its adverse effects on our environments, Government had started the Vanamahotsava, when new saplings are planted with great pomp and show. But unfortunately, as soon as the ritual is over and the photographs of the VIPS planting the trees have appeared in the newspapers, the whole programme is forgotten. Hardly 10 per cent of the saplings grow into trees. In most cases, even cages are removed or stolen. The older trees in the parks and along the roads do not get any attention. The result is that due to vagaries of weather, these wither away. There is practically no replacement. The adverse effects of the neglect of the trees are already visible in the abnormal changes in the climatic pattern of the country. Areas which were known for heavy rains, generally go dry and those areas often get flooded which used to experience droughts. The weather god is playing havoc with our climatic cycle.

The authorities are requested to look into this serious problem and take timely action to avert the imminent ecological crisis.
