Letter to the Editor regarding the safety of citizens during “Bandh”.
Sir,
This is to draw your attention to the unprecedented violence observed during the Bandh on Nov. 20, 2002, which was called by the small unit owners. The Delhi govt. was caught totally off- guard and the mob went into a rampage damaging both govt. and private properties, thereby holding the part of the city, especially East Delhi to ransom. What was really shocking, was the safety of the citizens, which was at the mercy of the hooligans. The parents of the school-going children were the worst hit, more mentally. The callous attitude of the Delhi govt. speaks volumes about its in consideration for the citizens of Delhi. As a citizen of this city for the last 25 years, I had nothing but disgust for the Delhi govt. If such incidents can take place in the capital, one shudders to think about the hapless population of rural and semi-urban India.
