Commonwealth Day – 24th May

Commonwealth Day celebration is an annual event during which all the 54 member countries of the commonwealth celebrate their links with one another jointly to highlight common interests. Almost all of Britain’s former colonies have become independent and these countries promote the economic development of Asia and Far East countries by promoting better social, economic, education and health conditions of the countries. India is one of the members of the commonwealth.

Commonwealth Day is observed on 24th May, the foundation day of the British Commonwealth of Nations. People use the day to promote understanding about global issues, international co-operation and the work of the modern commonwealth. Each year there is a different theme. From the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty The Queen, who issues a special message, through commonwealth prime ministers and presidents, to the citizens of the commonwealth countries. Many things like sports tournaments to tree planting ceremonies are organised on this occasion. The theme of the Commonwealth Day 2003 is “Partners in Development”. The theme reflects the association’s key priorities that most of its fifty-four members are developing countries. The joint commonwealth societies council, which is made up of more than 20 commonwealth organisations, recommends the theme every year related to Commonwealth Day. The poor economic condition of the people of the commonwealth countries can be lifted only by achieving faster economic growth while at the same time the safety of the environment should be taken care of. However, the development requires a partnership between governments and civil society which will encourage business flow. As for example, both developed and developing nations have a common interest in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. The Commonwealth heads of Governments meet (CGOGM), has now acquired international significance and popularity. India hosted the 24th Commonwealth Summit at New Delhi in 1983.
