On May 22, 1819, the steamship, The Savannah departed from Savannah, Georgia. It was the first successful transoceanic voyage under steam propulsion. Thus it made material contribution to the advancement of ocean transportation. International Maritime Organisation at London was established in 1958 to promote cooperation in technical problems of international shipping and to encourage the removal of discriminatory action by different governments and restrictive practices by shippers.
