World Asthma Day – 7th May

World Asthma Day is celebrated on the 7th of May every year. Celebration of this day is an awareness campaign about Asthma disease. The whole day programme is aimed at helping asthmatics control and to maintain a normal lifestyle through a “personal Asthma action plan.” Thus asthma day is also a salutation to the scientists and doctors who are engaged in providing relief and succour to asthmatics.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder in which the patient suffers difficulty in breathing. Asthma attacks can be sudden, sharp and long. The patient gasps for air as he feels suffocated. The suffocation is due to the phlegm that develops inside the lungs. Asthma attacks can be triggered due to exposure to cold, exertion or changes in weather. Much of the air is held up in the lungs during an attack of asthma. The phlegm during asthma attack doesn’t get drained off from the lungs, hence it can lead to bronchitis. If asthma will not be controlled, it often leads to sleepless nights, limitation on exercise, absenteeism from school, hospitalization, and in some cases, death. However, with proper diagnosis, good treatment and preventive measures to asthma can be controlled and a person’s quality of life greatly improved.

Hence asthma can be managed with proper guidance and care. Asthma can be managed well and could be cured without feeling frustrated.
