Social Empowerment Memorial Day – 20th March

Social Empowerment Memorial Day is celebrated on the 20th of March as Bharat Ratna, Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar had given a new direction to social justice to secure equality in 1927. He started a public campaign to give the right to all to use the water of Chaudar Tank in Mahad, (Kolaba). According to Dr. Ambedkar, “It is not that if we don’t drink water from Chaudar Tank, we cannot live, we want only to show that like others, we are also human beings.”

The right to Equality is a fundamental right of a person. If any person is called untouchable due to his birth, then this would be a mockery of humanity. In this way, Baba Saheb became the torchbearer to the lower caste. He taught them to be on their own strength by being mentally alert and aware of the rights. Seats have also been reserved in different services to provide them a good livelyhood and live with dignity. But there is other side of the coin also. Weaker sections have to work hard for being literate and understand the call of the hour to move ahead with a strong mindset. They should not merely have to rely on the lines of their palms but have to create dignity for themselves by shedding superstition and having faith in their rights and duties. Social justice and empowerment is not a tangible thing to be delivered from upper caste to lower caste, they should be achieved by mental toughness as a right.
