English Essay on “Some books are to be tasted; others to be swallowed; some few to be chewed and digested”

Some books are to be tasted; others to be swallowed; some few to be chewed and digested

The importance and utility of a book is determined by what it contains. If its contents are able to create a healthy interest for it in its readers or are able to convey to them a virtuous message, it may be considered worthy and hence acceptable. But, all books that we come across do not contain either ideas or information which can improve our knowledge or quality of life. Those books that do not contain anything of worth, may, after a cursory reference, be ignored totally. Alongside these books are others, which are usually, read more out of compulsion than out of interest? Many textbooks meant for academic learning are of this type. However, apart from both these types, stand a category of books, which, besides appealing to the imagination of the readers, and arousing their interest, enlighten them with noble ideas? These books should be so read that their message is suitably absorbed.
