Double Shadows

Materials Required:

  1. Pencil
  2. Some sheet to type on
  3. A book
  4. A ruler
  5. Some clay
  6. Two flashlights

The diameter is generally defined as the measure of a width, from one side to the other.

Though the sun is located at a gargantuan distance from the earth, its size is so huge, that it can send a wide path of sunlight, from both sides of its diameter.

It even seems to the viewers that the light is coming from more than one place, as the wide path of the light causes more than one shadow.

Outdoors on a sunny day, place a sheet of paper on the ground And place a pencil on it for the experiment. Now gently raise the pencil upwards. As you do that, you shall see the emergence of two shadows.

As you keep going higher, you shall see that the shadows start dissolving. This is because light from one side of the sun, which causes the shadows to develop, also goes on to wash away the shadow being formed by the light coming from the other side of the sun’s diameter.

You can also see a more convenient representation of the same, with the help of two flashlights. Tape the sheet of typing paper on to a book cover and prop up the book by opening it slightly.

Now apply some clay on the floor and prop up the pencil on it, about 15 cm from the front of the book. Also, place two flashlights at a distance of around 18 cm from the front of the book. Now turn the flashlights on. The light should be directed in such a manner so that they can form a shadow of the pencil on the paper. Follow the same routine with the other flashlight too. Even though it will make another shadow of the pencil on the paper, you will see how the first shadow is made dimmer, with the light from the second flashlight washing it out.

Optical Lenses

Convex lenses are those lenses which curve outwards. Concave lens Concave lenses are those lenses which curve inwards. The picture shows the effect of light and changes which occur to light when it passes through both types of lenses. Light converges or bends inwards when it passes through a convex lens while it diverges or bends outwards when it passes through a concave lens. Small objects can be magnified by convex lenses.

On the other hand when things are seen through concave lenses they seem to be smaller than what they actually are.
